Youth suicide is a serious public health issue. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 10 to 24 in the United States.
Parents, caregivers, teachers, coaches, and friends are often the first to notice changes. Taking warning signs seriously and getting support early can save lives.
SAMHSA and the 988 Lifeline note that warning signs often involve new behavior, worsening behavior, or behavior linked to painful events, major loss, or major change.
AAP and SAMHSA note that suicide risk is complex and may involve depression, trauma, substance use, bullying, isolation, painful losses, exposure to violence, chronic illness, or prior suicidal behavior.
Protective factors can include strong family connection, supportive friendships, trusted adults, access to mental health care, school support, coping skills, and a home environment that reduces access to lethal means.
It is okay to ask directly if your child is thinking about suicide or self-harm. Asking does not plant the idea. AAP resources for clinicians and families emphasize open, direct, supportive conversations and timely referral for help.
School counselors, social workers, coaches, and trusted family members can be important parts of the support system. AAP notes that young people often disclose suicidal feelings in school settings or through writing, art, and behavior changes.
Let trusted adults know what is going on so your child is supported across home, school, and community settings.
Dyson Pediatrics can help families recognize warning signs, coordinate urgent next steps, and connect children and teens with the mental health support they need.
