What Is a Newborn Circumcision?

Circumcision is a procedure that removes the foreskin, the skin covering the tip of the penis. It is usually performed during the newborn period when the baby is healthy and stable.

Some families choose circumcision for medical, cultural, religious, or personal reasons. Others choose not to circumcise. This is a decision parents can make after discussing the benefits, risks, timing, and aftercare with their pediatrician.

Benefits and Considerations

Newborn circumcision has both potential benefits and possible risks. The procedure is not required for a child to be healthy, but some families choose it after reviewing the information and talking with their pediatrician.

Potential benefits may include:

  • lower risk of urinary tract infections in infancy
  • lower risk of some infections later in life
  • lower risk of foreskin infections and phimosis
  • easier genital hygiene for some families

Possible risks are uncommon but can include bleeding, infection, or healing concerns. Our team will review what to watch for and how to care for the area after the procedure.

Circumcision Methods Used at Dyson Pediatrics

Dyson Pediatrics offers newborn circumcision in the office using two commonly used methods. Dr. Dyson uses the Gomco method, and Dr. Agarwal uses the Plastibell method.

Both methods are used to safely remove the foreskin during newborn circumcision. The provider will explain the method being used, what happens during the procedure, and what parents should expect during healing.

Gomco Method

The Gomco method uses a small protective device during the procedure. After the circumcision is complete, the device is removed before the baby leaves the office.

With the Gomco method, parents are typically instructed to use petroleum jelly as directed to help protect the healing area and prevent sticking to the diaper.

Plastibell Method

The Plastibell method uses a small plastic ring that stays in place after the procedure. The ring helps protect the area while it heals and usually falls off on its own within several days.

Parents will receive instructions on how to care for the area, what is normal during healing, and when to call the office if there are any concerns.

What to Expect During the Procedure

At Dyson Pediatrics, newborn circumcision is performed in a clean medical setting with attention to comfort and safety. The baby is positioned securely, the area is cleaned, and local pain control is used to help reduce discomfort.

The procedure itself usually takes only a short time. Afterward, our team will review care instructions with parents before the baby goes home.

Healing and Aftercare

After circumcision, it is normal for the tip of the penis to look red, raw, or yellowish as it heals. A light dressing or petroleum jelly may be used to keep the area from sticking to the diaper. Healing usually takes about 7 to 10 days.

  • apply petroleum jelly as directed if instructed by your provider
  • change diapers often and keep the area clean
  • if stool gets on the area, clean it gently
  • some fussiness, mild swelling, and a disrupted sleep pattern can happen early on
  • if a Plastibell ring is used, do not pull it off, it should fall off on its own

When to Call Dyson Pediatrics

Call Dyson Pediatrics if you have questions about healing or if something does not seem right after the procedure.

  • your baby does not urinate within 6 to 12 hours after the procedure
  • bleeding does not stop or the blood spot in the diaper is larger than a quarter
  • redness or swelling becomes worse after 3 to 5 days
  • you notice yellow crusted sores, spreading redness, or signs of infection
  • your baby develops a fever of 100.4°F or higher
  • the Plastibell ring slides down the shaft, does not seem positioned correctly, or you have concerns about the ring
