Circumcision is a personal decision for families
Performed with local pain control and aftercare guidance
Most newborns heal in about 7 to 10 days
Circumcision is a procedure that removes the foreskin, the skin covering the tip of the penis. It is usually performed during the newborn period when the baby is healthy and stable.
Some families choose circumcision for medical, cultural, religious, or personal reasons. Others choose not to circumcise. This is a decision parents can make after discussing the benefits, risks, timing, and aftercare with their pediatrician.
Newborn circumcision has both potential benefits and possible risks. The procedure is not required for a child to be healthy, but some families choose it after reviewing the information and talking with their pediatrician.
Potential benefits may include:
Possible risks are uncommon but can include bleeding, infection, or healing concerns. Our team will review what to watch for and how to care for the area after the procedure.
Dyson Pediatrics offers newborn circumcision in the office using two commonly used methods. Dr. Dyson uses the Gomco method, and Dr. Agarwal uses the Plastibell method.
Both methods are used to safely remove the foreskin during newborn circumcision. The provider will explain the method being used, what happens during the procedure, and what parents should expect during healing.
The Gomco method uses a small protective device during the procedure. After the circumcision is complete, the device is removed before the baby leaves the office.
With the Gomco method, parents are typically instructed to use petroleum jelly as directed to help protect the healing area and prevent sticking to the diaper.
The Plastibell method uses a small plastic ring that stays in place after the procedure. The ring helps protect the area while it heals and usually falls off on its own within several days.
Parents will receive instructions on how to care for the area, what is normal during healing, and when to call the office if there are any concerns.
At Dyson Pediatrics, newborn circumcision is performed in a clean medical setting with attention to comfort and safety. The baby is positioned securely, the area is cleaned, and local pain control is used to help reduce discomfort.
The procedure itself usually takes only a short time. Afterward, our team will review care instructions with parents before the baby goes home.
After circumcision, it is normal for the tip of the penis to look red, raw, or yellowish as it heals. A light dressing or petroleum jelly may be used to keep the area from sticking to the diaper. Healing usually takes about 7 to 10 days.
Call Dyson Pediatrics if you have questions about healing or if something does not seem right after the procedure.
