What to Do at Home for a Fever

Fever is usually a sign that your child’s body is fighting an infection. In many cases, home treatment focuses on helping your child rest, drink fluids, and feel more comfortable while you watch for symptoms that may need medical care.

The fever number is only part of the picture. Your child’s behavior, breathing, alertness, hydration, and comfort matter just as much.

Give Plenty of Fluids

Children with fever lose more fluid and can get dehydrated more easily. Encourage your child to drink often.

  • offer water often for older children
  • offer breast milk or formula for babies under 6 months
  • cold fluids or popsicles may be easier for some children
  • watch for fewer wet diapers, dry mouth, or low urine output

Even if your child does not want to eat much, drinking fluids is very important.

Dress Your Child Lightly

Dress your child in one layer of lightweight clothing so body heat can escape more easily.

If your child has chills or is shivering, it is okay to use a light blanket to keep them comfortable.

When to Use Fever Medicine

Not every fever needs medicine. Fever reducers can help if your child is uncomfortable, achy, not sleeping well, or not drinking because they feel miserable.

  • use only one fever medicine at a time unless your pediatrician gives different instructions
  • follow the correct dose for your child’s weight
  • always use the measuring tool that comes with the medicine
  • do not give aspirin to children

You can direct families to your fever and pain medication dose page for exact dosing.

What Usually Helps Your Child Feel Better

  • rest and quiet time
  • small frequent drinks
  • light clothing
  • a comfortable room temperature
  • extra cuddles and reassurance

What to Avoid

  • ice baths or very cold baths
  • rubbing alcohol on the skin
  • heavy blankets or overdressing
  • giving adult medicine to a child
  • focusing only on the thermometer instead of how your child looks and acts
