Supporting parents is an important part of supporting healthy child development
A postpartum test or screening is a simple way to check in on how a parent is feeling emotionally after delivery. It is not about judgment. It is meant to help identify whether symptoms such as sadness, anxiety, overwhelm, or difficulty coping may need more attention or support.
We recommends postpartum depression screening during infant well visits at 1, 2, 4, and 6 months because pediatric offices are often one of the places families are seen regularly during the postpartum period.
Postpartum depression and anxiety are treatable. Needing support does not mean you are doing anything wrong. Screening gives families a chance to speak up early and get connected with the right help when needed.
Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, irritability, or emotional disconnection may be discussed during screening.
Parents may also experience racing thoughts, constant worry, panic, or a sense that daily tasks feel harder than expected.
Sleep disruption, feeding stress, recovery after delivery, and the demands of caring for a newborn can all affect emotional wellness.
When screening suggests a concern, our office can help guide families toward appropriate next steps and outside support resources.
Postpartum emotional health affects both the parent and the baby. When postpartum depression goes unrecognized, it can affect the parent infant relationship and may also affect things like follow through with well child visits and health guidance.
Screening helps identify concerns that might otherwise be overlooked during a busy and exhausting postpartum period.
Parents who are struggling can be connected with counseling, community resources, and other care options more quickly.
When parents feel supported, it can make the early months of caring for a baby feel more manageable and more connected.
If a parent is having thoughts of self harm, thoughts of harming the baby, feels unsafe, or is in emotional crisis, emergency help should be sought immediately. Families should call 911, go to the nearest emergency room, or use a crisis resource right away.
