Comfort First

The goal is helping your child feel better, not chasing a perfect temperature

What Fever Home Care Really Means

Fever home care is about helping your child stay comfortable while you watch for signs that they are getting better or worse. Most fevers are caused by common viral illnesses and improve with time, fluids, and rest.

A fever is only one piece of the picture. It is just as important to notice whether your child is alert, drinking fluids, breathing comfortably, urinating normally, and responding like themselves.

How to Monitor Your Child at Home

  • check the temperature as needed, but do not check obsessively
  • watch your child’s energy, alertness, and breathing
  • make sure your child is still drinking fluids
  • watch urine output or wet diapers
  • notice whether symptoms are improving, staying the same, or getting worse

Many parents feel more reassured by writing down temperatures, medicine times, and symptoms during the illness.

Simple Ways to Keep Your Child Comfortable

  • offer plenty of fluids
  • dress your child in one light layer unless they are shivering
  • use a light blanket if your child has chills
  • let your child rest, but they do not have to stay in bed all day if they feel up to quiet activity
  • use fever medicine if your child is uncomfortable, not just because the number is high

Fluids and Hydration Matter

Fever can increase fluid needs, so hydration is one of the most important parts of home care.

  • offer extra water or other fluids for older children
  • for babies under 6 months, offer breast milk or formula
  • cold drinks or popsicles may help older children drink more
  • watch for dry mouth, fewer wet diapers, or low urine output

Being well hydrated can also help the body release heat more effectively.

What Not to Do

  • do not overdress your child
  • do not use rubbing alcohol on the skin
  • do not use ice packs or very cold baths
  • do not give aspirin to children
  • do not focus only on getting the temperature to normal

Very cold baths, ice packs, and alcohol rubs are not recommended and can make children more uncomfortable.
