It is always better to reach out early than wait and hope it passes.

Why This Topic Matters

Youth suicide is a serious public health issue. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 10 to 24 in the United States.

Parents, caregivers, teachers, coaches, and friends are often the first to notice changes. Taking warning signs seriously and getting support early can save lives.

Warning Signs Parents Should Watch For

SAMHSA and the 988 Lifeline note that warning signs often involve new behavior, worsening behavior, or behavior linked to painful events, major loss, or major change.

  • talking about wanting to die or not wanting to be here
  • expressing hopelessness or feeling trapped
  • severe sadness, emotional pain, or despair
  • major changes in mood, sleep, behavior, or personality
  • pulling away from friends, family, sports, or activities they used to enjoy
  • increased agitation, anger, irritability, or risky behavior
  • giving away important belongings or saying goodbye in unusual ways
  • declining school performance or sudden behavior problems
  • self-harm behaviors or talk about self-harm

Risk Factors

AAP and SAMHSA note that suicide risk is complex and may involve depression, trauma, substance use, bullying, isolation, painful losses, exposure to violence, chronic illness, or prior suicidal behavior.

Protective Factors

Protective factors can include strong family connection, supportive friendships, trusted adults, access to mental health care, school support, coping skills, and a home environment that reduces access to lethal means.

What Parents Should Do Right Away

  1. Stay calm and take your child seriously.
  2. Listen without arguing, shaming, or minimizing what they say.
  3. Stay with your child if you believe there is immediate concern.
  4. Call or text 988 for crisis support and guidance.
  5. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if your child is in immediate danger.
  6. Arrange urgent mental health evaluation and follow-up care.

How to Talk With Your Child or Teen

It is okay to ask directly if your child is thinking about suicide or self-harm. Asking does not plant the idea. AAP resources for clinicians and families emphasize open, direct, supportive conversations and timely referral for help.

  • use a calm voice and simple words
  • tell them you are glad they told you or that you want to understand
  • avoid punishment, anger, or debating their feelings
  • focus on safety and getting support right away

School, Friends, and Community Support

School counselors, social workers, coaches, and trusted family members can be important parts of the support system. AAP notes that young people often disclose suicidal feelings in school settings or through writing, art, and behavior changes.

Let trusted adults know what is going on so your child is supported across home, school, and community settings.
