Benadryl and Diphenhydramine Doses for Children

Benadryl, also known as diphenhydramine, may be used for allergic reactions, hives, and some allergy symptoms when recommended by your child’s provider. This page gives Tucson families a quick, easier-to-read dosing reference along with important safety information.

Important Safety Information

  • Use your child’s weight to choose the correct dose.
  • Do not give diphenhydramine to children under 6 years old unless your child’s doctor tells you to.
  • You can give diphenhydramine every 6 hours as needed.
  • This medicine may cause drowsiness, but some children become more excited or hyper instead.
  • Always use the dosing tool that comes with the medicine. Do not use a kitchen spoon.
